Computer geek I am not!
I'm in the process of looking for a new laptop for when I go back out on the road next month.

Here is the best option I have found for myself for under $500.

An Acer Aspire 3680 for under $400. Add two 1GB memory chips so that it can run Vista, then some. Of course, the most intensive things I use a computer for are NHL07 and playing DVDs. I don't do SecondLife or online gaming or any of that stuff.

So, since 90% of my friends list knows more about computers than I do. Any suggestions or opinions would be very helpful. Thank you :)

It comes with Vista and I don't want to spend $90 to downgrade to XP.

When comparing graphics capabilities, watch out for cards that advertise HyperMemory or TurboCache... What they don't tell you is half the memory is on the card, and the other half is pulled from system memory. (ie: 256 Radeon HyperMemory is actually 128MB on card, 128 from system ram). Thus could effect gaming.

I'm happy with my 15.4 widescreen, which does ok. 17" are nice, but heard they suck down the battery (which might be ok if your always planning on keeping the machine plugged in).

You are correct... Memory (RAM) is probably biggest performance impact (other than CPU). If you have the option, XP is better than Vista, but I've dumbed down Vista enough to save some performance. Vista can be a hog, and wish I had the option to downgrade.

Another tip... How long are you planning on using your new Laptop? If for a long time, you might want to consider one with a faster processor. Or, if this is a short term, a lower process might be ok. As with everything, software will require more and more horsepower (memory, CPU, HD, etc).

Anyway.. hope it helps. :)

This link might also help regarding Mobile CPUs: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/02/27/dual_core_notebook_cpus_explored/

looks like a good deal, and a ram upgrade will definatly help performance, if its not gonna be for anything super crazy processor intensive you otta be fine

Remove me off your popularity contest. I don't want to be a part of that at all. -Mirage

And when I say remove, just to clarify, I mean every bit of the word. I do not want to be associated with that.
